THE MATHEMATICAL CONVERSATION
How do analytic structures, birational transformations, and positivity reveal the geometry of complex varieties?
This seminar explores the interplay between complex surfaces, anticanonical geometry, and the birational structure of algebraic varieties. The geometry and classification of complex surfaces, including ball quotients and fake projective planes, offer a meeting point for analytic, algebraic, and arithmetic methods. Anticanonical divisors, varieties of Fano type, and Mori dream spaces bring positivity and the minimal model program into focus, while cone conjectures and Calabi–Yau pairs illuminate the relationship between birational symmetries and the geometry of the cone of divisors. The study of singularities further invites discussion of how local structures influence global classification. Through lectures and informal exchange, the meeting seeks to stimulate collaboration across these directions and engage young researchers in the shared questions that connect them.

Abstract. The ascending chain condition (ACC) for minimal log discrepancies, conjectured by Shokurov, is introduced to attack the termination of the minimal model program. It states that the minimal log discrepancies of pairs of fixed dimension and with the coefficients of boundaries in a fixed set satisfying the descending chain condition satisfy the ACC. In this talk, I show the ACC for minimal log discrepancies for bounded threefolds with arbitrary boundaries. This is joint work with Keng-Hung Steven Lin.

At HSR Tainan Station, transfer to the adjoining TRA Shalun Station and take a local train to Tainan Station. HSR Tainan Station and central Tainan Station are different stations.
From Taoyuan International Airport, connect to HSR Taoyuan Station and take a southbound high-speed train to Tainan, then use the Shalun connection. Check current connections and schedules before travelling.
